Walmart's new Walmart Express store in Wrigleyville.

Chicago, Ill., November 30, 2011 – Chicago’s second Walmart Express store opened today at 3636 North Broadway, bringing the community low prices, every day in a smaller format. The 14,800 square-foot store is designed to make shopping quick and easy for customers who want to save money and find what they need close to home.

Aldermen James Cappleman and Thomas Tunney along with Wrigleyville business and community leaders were in attendance for the grand opening celebration.

“I have been pleased with Walmart’s outreach into our community and the steps they have taken to identify local residents for job opportunities,” said Alderman James Cappleman.

The new store offers convenient access for fill-in and stock-up shopping trips and features fresh groceries, pharmacy, consumables, health and beauty aids, over-the-counter medicines and more. The first Chicago Walmart Express opened July 2010 in the Chatham Market on the South Side.

As part of the retailer’s commitment to the local Wrigleyville community, grants from the Walmart Foundation were presented during the grand opening celebrations to the following local organizations: Howard Brown Center, Lakeview Presbyterian Church, Center on Halsted and Open Arms Church.

“We think Walmart Express can be part of the solution for local customers who want more affordable grocery options close to home,” said Market Manager Jack Williams. “As we continue to evaluate sites across the city, we’ll also continue to be flexible in our approach to ensure that store sizes and formats are a reflection of the surrounding neighborhood.”

In June 2010, Walmart announced the “Chicago Community Investment Partnership,” a five-year plan to open several dozen stores, create approximately 10,000 jobs and 2,000 unionized construction jobs, generate more than $500 million in sales and property taxes and develop charitable partnerships worth $20 million.
